THE BEST RELEASES OF 2013
December 23, 2013
Need some new music to listen to over the summer holidays? We asked some Gun Fever artists to recommend 3 of their favourite releases from 2013. The results were varied to say the least…
ADEM K / THE COMMUNITY CHEST
Toro Y Moi – Anything In Return
One of the more esoteric and original purveyors of the ridiculously named ‘chill wave’ genre. Great atmosphere regardless of how long someone was staring at a computer screen to achieve the desired result.
Yo La Tengo – Fade
Other than the bland Summer Sun album of a few years ago, I love everything they’ve done. Even supported them in 2001 – one of the few big bands I’ve met who thought our use of Casio keyboards was a clever move.
Paul McCartney – New
I could write an essay on this guy. I love him most when he’s being un-Beatley like on the track ‘Alligator’. There’s more steel to him than most people think and he’s obviously not doing it for the money alone anymore.
CORY RIST / MEZZANINE
Courtney Barnett – The Double EP: The Sea of Split Peas
Courtney came out of nowhere for me this year, and I’m glad she did. Storytelling in song writing is a dying art these, luckily this release is a cracker of a yarn.
Arctic Monkeys – AM
The last two records have been fantastic and this is another notch in the belt buckle. Pretty rare for this kind of career arc this day and age.
These New Puritans – Field of Reeds
This album has made me feel good about subtle music this year. Takes me on a peaceful, Kid A type serenity trip.
JOHN BARRINGTON / SUPER BEST FRIENDS
Future Of The Left – How to Stop Your Brain in an Accident
Pretty much love anything FOTL do. Good to see music press getting behind this album too.
The Drones – I See Seaweed
Depressing. Morbid. Awesome.
Stoked to discover these dudes while up late watching rage. Then disappointed to find out they’d just toured Australia and we’d yet to learn of their existence.
JOSHUA CALLIGEROS / SINCERELY, GRIZZLY
Reversing Falls – Reversing Falls
The best album you will never hear.
Violent Soho – Hungry Ghost
Dead Owls – Small Talk (EP)
The gudgest bois.
LIAM YOUNG / PUCK
All Pigs Must Die – Nothing Violates This Nature
This album is insane, definately APMD’s best effort yet. It’s brutal and thrashy, yet clever and catchy. Sick riffs and fills everywhere.
Pelican – Forever Becoming
I hadn’t heard of Pelican until this album came out & it blew me away. Instrumental stoner metal on another level with beautiful production.
Nails – Abandon All Life
Probably the heaviest band/album I’ve ever heard. An aural challenge at first, but i soon gave into the sludgy tones & intense drums.
